Bristol Community Ferry Boats has recently been awarded funding from Big Lottery through Power to Change, to run 4 “Get Started on the Water” Crew Training schemes.

The first scheme ran in March and was hugely popular; some of the top trainees have now gone on to get paid work with us or roles in similar positions elsewhere.

There are 10 available places on this next scheme running from the 5th June – 16th June. The training will cover our service operations, safety practices and emergency procedures, rope work, local knowledge, handling a medical emergency and active work experience.

The syllabus has been designed to cover all elements of the MCA COMPETENT CREW requirements that apply to small passenger vessels on inland waterways, whilst also covering specific local knowledge aspects.

How do I apply for the scheme?

Ensure your availability for the dates / times above.

Send us a detailed covering letter describing:

1. Something about yourself, your interests and abilities.

2. Why you’re interested in taking part in the training.

If you have a CV you can attach that if you wish, but it’s not a requirement. Send it to or, even better, pop into the office and give it to us in person at 44 The Grove, Bristol, BS1 4RB.

Get your applications in by the 8th of May.

If selected you must be available to attend an interview on the 18th or 19th of May.

If successful at interview you must be available to attend:

15 hours of training spread throughout the week beginning 5th June followed by a morning and an afternoon the following week to shadow our crew and get experience on the job.

You will be appraised and given feedback throughout the whole process by Rosie, your training co-ordinator, and at the end you will receive and in-house “Inland Waterways’ Crew” certificate.

Email any further questions FAO Rosie to or call the office on 01179273416 or Rosie on 07376 897143

Crew Job Description

Started in 2015, Power to Change is an independent charitable trust endowed with £150 million from the Big Lottery Fund to grow community business in England.

Over the next nine years, we will provide funding and support to help build many more sustainable community businesses that have positive economic, social and environmental impact in local places across England.

The Big Lottery Fund supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK. We are responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised by the National Lottery and invest over £650 million a year in projects big and small in health, education, environment and charitable purposes.

Since June 2004 we have awarded over £8 billion to projects that change the lives of millions of people. Every year we fund 13,000 small local projects tackling big social problems like poor mental health and homelessness.

Since the National Lottery began in 1994, £34 billion has been raised and more than 450,000 grants awarded.
